In Melbourne: Big Al, Small Protest

July 13, 2009 By jennifer

Al Gore Melbourne ver 2ANYONE who denies global warming is in the pay of big oil. Remember that is what the big man, Al Gore, said in his movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. But like so much that Mr Gore says, it just isn’t true.

Consider the 30-odd protesters who held placards outside the breakfast he spoke at this morning in Melbourne. The scruffy-lot, lead by a farmer Leon Ashby, were not there because someone paid them, but because they are outraged by Al Gore and what he has thrust on the world. In particular, his belief that we already have a climate crisis and that the only solution is carbon trading. [Read more…] about In Melbourne: Big Al, Small Protest

All members of the community sceptical that CO2 causes climate change are most welcome to join in an “Educational protest” outside where Al Gore will be giving a speech at Docklands peninsula, Melbourne, on Monday 13th July.

Defining the Sceptics (Part 4)

June 25, 2009 By jennifer

“GROWING up as your daughter, you have always taught me to live with an open mind, and to seek out facts before I choose a side of the fence whether it be agreeing or disagreeing with your own.”

This comment from Caroline Marohasy represents to me the essence of being a sceptic: A sceptic considers alternatives before making a decision.   An opinion will eventually form, but first there will be some reasoning.

A modern education may provide skills in writing and reading, even mathematics, but not necessarily in the ability to reason – especially if the education is value laden.

Masses Protest for More Government

June 15, 2009 By jennifer

Hundreds of environmental activists took to the streets of Australia’s main cities on Saturday, saying the Labor government was not doing enough on climate change.   The protests came ahead of a vote in the upper house Senate next week on the government’s planned emissions trading scheme, which the protesters regard as inadequate.   Read more here.

An Opportunity for Ordinary Australians to Oppose the ETS

May 18, 2009 By jennifer

IT would be difficult to justify an emissions trading scheme (ETS) that imposed large costs for purely symbolic benefit during a period of prosperity – it is absurd to consider as much during a financial crisis.

Given the outcry the Rudd government in Australia has decided to postpone introduction of its proposed ETS by one year. That’s good news.

But the enabling legislation is still going to parliament this June and every vote will count in the Senate.

Send the Senators in your state an eCard to let them know how you feel.

You can choose from one of three different cards at http://www.ListenToUs.org.au .
