If I’m not mistaken, they said the “Humbolt” Squid is invading the waters on La Jolla, CA. Humbolt County, California is 800 miles north of La Jolla and much colder. If the name of these squid come from the much cooler coastal county in Northern California does it mean that a cool water species is migrating south?
Looks like it’s the other way around…
They’re named after the Humboldt current. Humboldt current is a cold river that runs from Antarctica up the coast of South America. It gets disrupted by El Nino.
My bet Sean, you are sort of right. The squid usually inhabit the cold upwelling areas around the Equator but since these are turning warmer due to the el nino the critters have moved north to toward the cooler PDO shifted California current.
Is too many squid a problem? Calamari.
