The Railtrails site lists all the disused Australian railways that have been converted to bike paths. You avoid the traffic that way.

After experiencing the pleasure of riding in bicycle dominated cities in China back in 1987, there is no doubt that the major impediment to increased bicycle use is the fact that one must share road space with cars and heavy vehicles travelling at four times your speed. They just do not mix well.
But it is not just an issue of size and speed. Noise is an obvious element but the difference in scale is more telling. There is nothing like a bicycle for enjoying a more intimate scale and interaction with the landscape that cars can rarely get.
I suspect the big breakthrough in bicycle travel will be the addition of transparent roofing on high flow urban routes so riders can be certain of staying dry in all weather.
