This hill probably needed regular planned patch burning . i read where Aboriginals considered it to be very poor farming and environmental management if the landscape wasn’t controlled burnt at least every three years.Done at the correct time – usually when there is still moisture in the ground to encourage some regrowth and sunlight to occur as food for wildlife and food plants . This kills a small percentage of the younger and less valuable scrubbier species which also makes travel much much easier in the bush while perpetuating biodiversity .
Major Mitchell complained about the timber and scrub regrowth brought about by settlement around sydney, slowing his horse and wagon exploration parties in the early 1800,s. He went on up to the Darling where he recorded that he had “blushed inwardly” in front of his Aboriginal guide at the state of his next camp waterhole badly polluted by cattle. we are slow learners us greedy colonials !
