What Animal is This?

December 31, 2007 By neil

Cerci.jpg

As 2007 draws to a conclusion, I make my final entry for the year, in the form of a challenge: Can anyone identify this critter?

I photographed it on the distinctive new foliage of a juvenile mahogany (Dysoxylum sp.) and it is about 2 mm long (cerci excluded).

For 2008, I wish our entire readership all the very best.

This looks like something from the sea!
And a Happy New Year to you.

As a wild guess – hairy aphid or mealy bug?

It is on a leaf so I would think it is not from the sea! I have seen caterpillars which have similar long whiskers so my guess is it is a caterpillar. The picture has been taken head or tail on. I would have a clue as to the sort.

DHMO, My guess is we have a dorsal view. I can see some legs below what I guess is the abdomen.

Neil, I wouldn’t be as specific as Rog and guess a hairy aphid or mealy bug but I agree with him that it is likely to be an insect and I also agree with Rog that we have an Homopteran of some sort and probably an early instar.
