In the book “The Killers of Eden” there is a story of how a whaler fell out of the boat after they’d harpooned a whale that had taken off with the boat attached. – He found himself floating in the ocean alone. All night an Orca circled him until he was rescued by the other whalers the following morning. He believed the orca was keeping the sharks at bay.

The rescue itself was not the remarkable part. I’d say that the whale had some pretty sophisticated mirror neurons, to be able to recognize that this person–who wasn’t even a whale–was in trouble. The whale even intuited the danger before the other people realized that something was amiss. Wow!
